BogWarner DCT Touches Bosch CVT's "Cheese"

Not long ago, China Development Investment Corporation, led by the National Development and Reform Commission and jointly established by 12 Chinese automakers, and BorgWarner (China) Investment Co., Ltd. jointly established BorgWarner Dual Clutch Transmission Systems Co., Ltd. in Beijing, with both parties accounting for 34%. 66% of the controlling shareholder has come to invest in joint ventures, and plans to start construction this year. It will be completed and put into production in 2011 and will produce and develop core products in the dual-clutch automatic transmission. It is understood that this is the world’s most joint top-level automatic transmission project.

When the news came out, some people in the industry said that as a government-assisted and widely-applied “big DCT project,” it will directly put pressure on the CVT market represented by Bosch. In the future, the game between DCT and CVT will become increasingly fierce.

"Darly DCT project" is a purchasing consortium?

It is understood that among the 12 Chinese companies that signed the contract, such large auto groups as FAW, SAIC, and Dongfeng were included, and private companies such as Great Wall and Geely were also included. However, the luxury lineup ultimately did not grasp the "right to speak." This inevitably makes people guess that this cooperation is not a joint venture of R&D, but a combination of procurement.

"This cooperation, Borg Warner did not choose the transmission company, but chose the vehicle factory, the purpose is likely to support the vehicle factory, engage in joint procurement." Secretary of the China Gear Association Wang Shengtang that "through the equity to the vehicle In conjunction with parts and components, BorgWarner is trying to use its joint venture to expand its share of the DCT market."

In response, Zhang Guobao, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, believes: “This is a win-win project.” The joint venture between the two companies set up by 12 vehicle companies and BorgWarner to jointly develop and produce DCT will not only help Chinese auto companies achieve high levels of automation. The independent production of transmission will promote the continuous upgrading of self-owned brand cars, and it will also help BorgWarner's key assembly products expand its market share in China.

Moved Bosch's "cheese"?

At present, the field of automatic transmission in China is still dominated by a few foreign companies. Import data in recent years shows that the annual import of automatic transmissions is as high as US$10 billion or more, and some companies even have to abandon the production of automatic transmission models. For these foreign automatic transmission companies, the Chinese market is undoubtedly a "fat."

However, in the fight for this "fat" technical program, AT is the traditional automatic transmission technology, which dominates the US Department of Automobiles; CVT is widely used in Japanese cars, and is mainly used in small cars; AMT High transmission efficiency, but not enough comfort. Zhang Guobao concluded that the DCT (Double Clutch Automatic Transmission) is the most suitable for the situation in China after the organization of related companies and technical departments after discussion.

This time, Zhang Guobao attended the signing ceremony as a government, which made people guess that the future development of DCT will receive more support from the government level. "From the current point of view, it is very favorable to BorgWarner. This government-led consortium has implicitly recognized BorgWarner and 'pushing hands'," Wang Shengtang told reporters.

It is understood that 12 vehicle manufacturers occupy more than 90% of the market share in the domestic branded passenger vehicle market. With so many partners, the market prospect of BorgWarner DCT is very broad.

Given the limited market, if the DCT market of BorgWarner expands, it will certainly trigger the “cheese” in the Bosch CVT market.

Bosch "alteration"

In the course of the signing of BorgWarner's contract, Bosch seems to have realized that "war" may be inevitable. As a result, a tough technical monopoly strategy of the past has been changed, and the transfer of technology to local Chinese companies has begun to increase, which will promote the development of the Chinese CVT market.

Fan Weike, global vice president of the Bosch Group's Continuously Variable Transmission Business Unit, said in an interview that he is willing to provide proprietary technology transfer and engineering support to Chinese companies and help China's own brands develop their own CVT gearboxes. This move will also help Bosch and the OEM to increase their CVT purchases.

It is also understood that Bosch has jointly developed CVT projects with a number of vehicle manufacturers and first-tier independent suppliers. In the next two years, two customers of Bosch's pressure steel belts, Jetco and Belgium's Punch, will officially start production at the CVT plants in Guangzhou and Nanjing respectively.

Relevant information

DCT dual clutch is a kind of automatic transmission that can realize automatic transmission function, but its implementation principle is different from AT (hydraulic automatic transmission) and CVT (continuously variable transmission). It realizes the smooth transition of shifting through the alternate combination of two clutches, and realizes the automation in the shifting process through the control of the motor or solenoid valve by the controller (electrical control unit).

This technique was first invented by Americans in 1946. At that time, it was necessary to realize the automatic control of clutch integration, but it was difficult to realize because at that time there was no research and development for the microcontroller, PLC, and DSP control chips.

In the 90s of the last century, BorgWarner of the United States began to develop DCT technology, while other manufacturers have also been paying close attention to the development of this technology. It is understood that in the 1990s Japan was also studying, but in the end it gave up DCT research. Later, BorgWarner joined Volkswagen to develop DCT technology and used it for the first time in Audi TT models in 2003. Its performance suddenly shocked the automotive industry.
