This report comes from Tim Olk:
On Saturday, July 23, 2016, the Chicago Fire Department's Tower Ladder 10 was dispatched to a high-rise building on North Halsted after receiving a call about four people trapped in an elevator. After attempts to reset the elevator failed, the department initiated a "blind shaft" response to rescue the individuals.
The following units were deployed:
- Battalion 3
- Tower Ladder 10
- Squad 1
- Squad 2
- Special Operations Chief 515
- An ambulance
The elevator was stuck between the second and third floors. Firefighters secured the area, locked out the elevator, and set up on the fifth floor using ropes. They worked their way down to the fourth floor, where they lowered one firefighter into the elevator shaft. There, they found four girls who had been trapped for two hours but were in good condition and remained calm throughout the ordeal.
The firefighters then used ropes to bring the girls to the fourth floor, where paramedics provided medical evaluation and ensured their safety. The incident highlighted the quick response and skill of the Chicago Fire Department in handling emergency situations in high-rise buildings.
