South Korea uses a cigarette filter to make super capacitors to charge faster and live longer

South Korean scientists have claimed that they have found ways to turn cigarette butts into materials for electric storage devices that can power mobile phones and electric cars.

Researchers from Seoul National University in South Korea recently published a Paper in the journal Nanotechnology, explaining the process of converting cigarette filters into supercapacitors. Cigarette filters are mainly made of cellulose acetate fibers, and when they are discarded, they may endanger the environment.

The researchers said: "Our research has shown that cigarette filters can be converted to highly efficient carbon materials and can be successfully implemented in a simple step. This will not only provide a green solution but also meet the energy needs of the community."

Ultimately, these filters will be made into so-called supercapacitors, which scientists say they can store more electricity, charge faster, and last longer, compared to ordinary capacitors. The researchers said: "Because of its low cost, high porosity, good electrical conductivity and stability, carbon is considered an excellent material for the manufacture of supercapacitors."

According to the investigation of Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights by the American anti-smoking organization, cigarette butts are the most common waste in the world, and the annual waste generated is up to 765,000 tons.
