The U.S. Department of Justice is launching the largest anti-monopoly investigation in the history of the auto parts industry. At present, 34 people have been subject to criminal prosecution, and 27 companies have acknowledged the existence of monopolistic markets and price manipulation. These companies will receive a huge fine of 2.3 billion U.S. dollars in total.
The case originated four years ago when the FBI suddenly searched a number of auto parts companies in the Detroit area. After four years of investigation, it has been able to confirm that due to the monopolistic behavior of some companies, consumers have to bear the extra expenses of millions of dollars. Recently, a Japanese company’s executives were charged by the United States on charges of manipulating the price of air-conditioning control panels and instructing employees to destroy evidence after the incident. The company's customers include Toyota and other car companies.
The U.S. Justice Department stated that in the series of cases previously investigated, although the specific measures and tactics were different, the executives of the companies involved first contacted them via encrypted e-mail first, then met in a remote location, and finally Destroy meeting documents to prevent leaks.
After four years of investigation, the investigators found that some obscure auto parts also have a monopoly, such as seat belts, ignition coils, steering wheels, airbags, wipers, and even rubber damping pads, involving a market size of up to 5 billion US dollars.
