Nokia achieves 102Gbps aggregate broadband rate on a single fiber

The National Broadband Network Australia (NBN) recently successfully tested Nokia's general NG-PON fiber solution in Nokia's Melbourne lab. This test achieves a converged 102Gbps aggregate broadband rate on a single fiber and dynamically configures bandwidth to meet the data explosion of residential and corporate customers. The common NG-PON solution integrates technologies such as TWDM-PON (also known as NG-PON2), XGS-PON and GPON on the same fiber and provides a simple upgrade path for the fiber technology currently used in FTTP deployments. The ease with which TWDM-PON and XGS-PON technologies can be deployed over existing fiber networks saves the time and cost typically associated with laying new fibers. TWDM-PON technology provides four or more wavelengths per fiber, providing 2.5Gbps or 10Gbps symmetric or asymmetric rates per wavelength and 40Gbps aggregate rates. XGS-PON provides 10 Gbps symmetrical or asymmetric rates over one wavelength. With Nokia's next-generation, universal PON solution, NBN can test a wide range of PON technologies, including: TWDM-PON technology that enables 40Gbps symmetric rate XGS-PON technology that enables 10Gbps symmetric rate 2.5Gbps GPON technology can be achieved Overall, the above technology achieves upload and download aggregation rates of over 102 Gbps through a single shared access optical fiber. TWDM-PON dramatically increases data capacity, enabling customers to download 4K quality video up to 2 hours in just seconds. With advanced software, the technology also dynamically provides data capacity over the network to provide operators like NBN with a new choice to flexibly adapt to changing user needs. NBN will continue to increase its technical innovation and investment and actively commit to delivering the speed and quality of services that businesses and residential customers will need in the future. NBN and Nokia have conducted extensive testing (including XG-FAST) on fiber and copper cables, and the latest test results from the successful tests of TWDM-PON and XGS-PON. NBN CTO Dennis Steiger said: "Our long-term commitment to Nokia continues to improve the performance and speed of NBN networks, as demonstrated by the successful NG-PON2 technology test that we are currently deploying for NBN networks, More than 2 million end-users provide NBN services and are able to meet the service subscription needs of nearly 5 million users, meanwhile we will look to the future with a view to achieving greater improvement. We conducted NG-PON2 technical tests jointly with Nokia, Shows us the tremendous potential that this powerful technology has helped us meet our future bandwidth and capacity needs. " Ray Owen, head of Nokia Asia, said: "NBN has long been a valued Nokia customer and we are continually committed to delivering the latest innovations to NBN and Australia." The Nokia NG-PON solution reflects our commitment to NBN, The program can evolve to NBN networks to meet the growing data needs of current and future users in Australia. "
