U.S. agencies: Limiting Chinese tires for more than three years

The “Tightness Curse” of the US tires that lingered for the first three years on the Chinese tire industry will expire in September this year, and the United States has not made a decision on whether to continue to impose relevant punitive tariff decisions on related products. A special report issued by the Institute’s Peterson Institute of International Economics said that restricting Chinese tires is not worth the candle, and hopes that the measure will be terminated on time in September this year.

The report titled "US Tire Tariffs: Rescue Small Jobs at High Costs" comprehensively analyzes the effects of the Obama administration's 2009 restrictions on Chinese tire special protection measures, noting that this measure has not brought real benefits to the US tire industry. On the contrary, the U.S. consumer and retail industry suffered huge losses, and it also incurred China’s retaliatory measures to limit imports of U.S. broiler chickens.

It is understood that on September 11, 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama decided to implement a three-year punitive tariff on all cars and light-duty truck tyres imported from China. That is, the import tax rate for tyres will be changed from the original one in the first year. The 4% increase is 35%, the second year is 30%, and the third year is 25%. This is the first time that the United States has implemented special safeguard measures against China.
