Country Club Hills has recently been added to the MABAS Division 24 website, marking it as one of the departments now featured. The fire department operates from two stations and is equipped with three ambulances, four fire engines, and a unique tower ladder. Among their fleet, Engine 1140 stands out—it's a 1980 American LaFrance Century, a 75-foot Water Chief Quint, featuring a 1,500-GPM pump and a 300-gallon water tank. Although it’s labeled as Truck 1140, the aerial ladder is currently not operational, so it’s being used primarily as an engine.
In addition, Country Club Hills proudly owns the only HME/Ahrens-Fox/RK Aerials tower ladder in Illinois, making it a rare and valuable asset in the region. This particular piece of equipment was showcased in a recent fire incident, which you can view [here](#), with photos taken by Karl Klotz.
The department's headquarters is located at Station 2 on 4520 W. 175th Street, as seen in this photo by Jack Connors. Another notable vehicle in their fleet is the HME/Ahrens-Fox/RK tower ladder, which is also displayed in a separate image. The iconic American LaFrance Water Chief Quint, Engine 1140, is another highlight, shown in a detailed photo that captures its classic design.
American LaFrance produced several models under the “Chief†series, including the Ladder Chief, Ladder Chief Quint, Water Chief, Water Chief Quint, and the Aero Chief. The Aero Chief was a specialized unit with a two-piece articulating boom and a platform, similar to the Snorkel system. The Water Chief model was designed with a pre-piped waterway, while the Ladder Chief was a straight ladder.
These units could be mounted on a chassis with a pump and tank to earn the "Quint" designation. Several brochures from the American LaFrance collection, including those for the 75-foot Water Chief Quint, the Ladder Chief, and the Water Chief, provide insight into these historic designs. These documents are part of Larry Shapiro's extensive collection and offer a glimpse into the past of fire apparatus manufacturing.
Today, very few of these 'Chief' aerials remain in active service, making them even more significant when they are still operational. Country Club Hills’ preservation of such historical equipment highlights their commitment to both tradition and modern firefighting needs.
