New ambulance in Clarendon Hills

Excerpts from the Chicago Tribune:

It seems like a lucky call by Clarendon Hills officials to keep their old ambulance as a backup after purchasing a brand-new $259,000 model in December 2014. The 2015 Freightliner/Horton ambulance, which arrived on December 11, has been sidelined since February 23 due to cracks in the interior walls, according to Fire Chief Brian Leahy. It’s expected to remain out of service until late March while repairs are carried out.

“There was significant cracking, and we sent it back to the dealer,” Leahy explained. “We’re hoping this will be a quick fix, but it’s clearly not ideal.”

The dealership responsible for the ambulance is Foster Coach Sales, Inc., based in Sterling, Illinois. They specialize exclusively in ambulances and sent the vehicle back to its manufacturer, Horton Ambulance, in Ohio.

“On March 9, the ambulance will be completely disassembled and then reassembled,” Leahy said. “It started with one crack, and then five more appeared within a week. The entire interior needs to be taken apart and put back together.”

While Leahy is disappointed that the new ambulance is already out of commission just months after delivery, he remains confident the issue will be resolved. “It’s a glitch, not a lemon,” he said. “The problem is cosmetic, but it definitely needs to be fixed.”

Until the new ambulance is back in service, the town is relying on its 2008 model. Originally, the plan was to sell or trade in the older ambulance. However, two verbal offers of $30,000 each came in during the process.

Instead of moving forward with a sale, internal discussions led to the decision to keep the 2008 ambulance as a backup. This is especially important since the department traditionally only operates with one ambulance at a time. While a ladder truck is equipped with some medical equipment, it can’t transport patients to the hospital.

Leahy noted that the department could manage without a backup during the repair period, but Foster Coach Sales has offered to provide a loaner ambulance if needed. For now, the community is grateful for the extra safety net, even if it’s an unexpected twist in the story of a newly purchased emergency vehicle.
