Mundelein and Libertyville Fire Department news

Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:

Two neighboring towns, Mundelein and Libertyville, are taking a collaborative approach to managing emergency response resources. In a move aimed at improving efficiency and reducing costs for taxpayers, both communities have agreed to share a tower ladder. Officials say the partnership is a smart way to make the most of limited budgets while still providing quality service.

The agreement, which was approved by the Mundelein village board and is expected to be finalized in Libertyville, allows Mundelein to use Libertyville’s tower ladder for an annual fee. This payment will help cover maintenance and future replacement costs. Although Mundelein's current tower ladder is still in good condition and doesn’t need immediate replacement, the shared arrangement gives the department more flexibility and options.

However, the deal hinges on Mundelein’s ability to sell, lease, or trade their existing ladder truck. Under the five-year agreement, Mundelein will pay $14,000 in the first year, with a 3% increase each subsequent year. Libertyville’s ladder truck and trained personnel would be called upon roughly five times a year. The two villages also have a separate mutual aid agreement from 2015 that covers structure fires.

Libertyville Fire Chief Rich Carani explained that the idea has been under discussion for about two years as both communities look for ways to stretch their budgets. “We’ve been exploring different options to ensure we can continue providing high-quality fire services without putting too much pressure on taxpayers,” he said.

Ladder trucks typically last longer than other emergency vehicles because they don’t rack up as many miles. However, a new one can cost over $1.3 million. Eric Guenther, Mundelein’s public safety director, emphasized the financial benefits of sharing such equipment. “When you consider the operational costs, fuel, and maintenance, it makes sense to share these assets rather than maintaining two separate ones,” he noted.

Libertyville’s ladder truck is 18 years old and due for replacement within the next seven years. Instead of purchasing a new one right away, the village is considering a major refurbishment that could extend its life by up to 10 years at a fraction of the cost. Plus, Libertyville is strategically located just two miles away from Mundelein’s main high-rise buildings and commercial areas, and it can reach the east side of the village without being blocked by railroad tracks.

This partnership not only helps both communities save money but also strengthens their ability to respond effectively to emergencies. It’s a great example of how cooperation can lead to smarter, more sustainable public services.

Thanks, Ron
