Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
A heroic K9 named Riggs, a German Shepherd from the Kenosha Police Department, was celebrated by a large crowd on Sunday after being shot during a tense confrontation with a suspect in a Chicago murder case.
Riggs was injured when he tackled a 25-year-old man who is accused of killing two people in Chicago earlier in the week. The incident took place during a police pursuit, and despite being shot in the head, Riggs survived and is now recovering.
The brave dog was brought back to Kenosha in a special procession from the Buffalo Grove animal hospital, where he was treated. He was welcomed home with cheers from residents, local officers, and other K9 units at Clausen Park, showing the deep respect and admiration for his bravery.
The crime spree began when a 25-year-old man was shot dead at a bus stop in the Hermosa neighborhood. Shortly after, the same suspect allegedly shot and killed 41-year-old Miguel Padilla Junior during a struggle. Police believe the suspect then stole Padilla’s car and fled the scene.
Chicago police alerted Kenosha County deputies about the suspect, who was later spotted at a gas station in Bristol. When confronted, the man ran off with a gun, prompting Riggs to give chase. The dog tackled the suspect near a highway, but the man shot Riggs once in the forehead. Despite the injury, Riggs managed to hold the suspect down until other officers arrived and subdued him with gunfire.
Riggs, who has served with the Kenosha Police Department for five years, is expected to make a full recovery. His actions have earned widespread praise, highlighting the critical role that K9 units play in law enforcement.
