Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:
A heroic K9 officer, Riggs, has returned home to a heartfelt welcome after being shot during a critical police operation last week. The German Shepherd, who has served for five years with the Kenosha Police Department, was injured while confronting a suspect in a deadly Chicago crime spree.
Riggs was shot in the forehead during a confrontation with a 25-year-old man suspected of killing two people in the city on Thursday. Miraculously, the brave dog survived and is now recovering at an animal hospital in Buffalo Grove. On Sunday, a special procession brought Riggs back to Kenosha, where he was greeted by a large crowd of citizens, fellow officers, and other K9 units at Clausen Park.
The incident began when a 25-year-old man was fatally shot at a bus stop in the Hermosa neighborhood. Just blocks away, he allegedly shot and killed 41-year-old Miguel Padilla Junior during a struggle. After stealing Padilla’s car, the suspect was later spotted at a gas station in Bristol, prompting Kenosha County deputies to respond.
As the suspect fled the scene, Riggs bravely tackled him near a highway. In a shocking moment, the suspect fired a single shot at Riggs, hitting him in the head. Despite the injury, Riggs remained steadfast, allowing officers to subdue the suspect. Two deputies then opened fire, striking the suspect in the abdomen and leg.
Riggs is expected to make a full recovery, and his bravery has captured the hearts of many. Local residents and law enforcement have praised his courage, calling him a true hero. As the community celebrates his return, Riggs’ story serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by K9 units every day.
