The Naperville Sun recently published an article that highlights the introduction of Will County’s latest emergency response asset — a state-of-the-art mobile command center designed to support large-scale incidents and major events.

This new vehicle is not just an upgrade from previous models; it's a complete transformation. According to Harold Damron, the county’s emergency management director, the technological advancements are so significant that there's essentially no comparison to earlier units.

During a recent demonstration at the county office building in downtown Joliet, the county board got a first-hand look at the unit, which resembles a large bus in size. The vehicle is designed to be deployed directly to the scene of an emergency, providing critical command and control capabilities on-site.

“This is a vehicle we can bring to the incident,” Damron explained. “It gives the incident commander — whether it's the fire chief, police chief, or another agency representative — all the tools they need to manage a large-scale event effectively.”

The unit features a Freightliner chassis and a Cummins turbo diesel engine, making it both powerful and reliable. It is equipped with 10 workstations for key personnel, including advanced radio systems that support multiple frequencies used by different agencies across the county.

Instead of traditional radios, the system uses a centralized computer-controlled network. This allows any laptop within the vehicle to access and control communication channels through software, eliminating the need to manually switch between devices.

“If I’m the fire chief and need to communicate on a specific frequency, I can simply open the software, select the channel, and use my headset to talk without ever touching a physical radio,” Damron said.

In addition to its primary role as a command center, the vehicle also acts as a backup communications hub during disruptions in 911 services or other public safety networks. It includes three fully functional 911-capable workstations in the rear, ensuring continuous connectivity when it matters most.

Funded largely through grants, the $1.15 million unit was partially supported by 911 surcharge funds, showing the community’s commitment to improving emergency response capabilities.
