Brevik develops a new gas carrier tank - cylindrical tank

According to the October 2015 issue of The NavalArchitect, Brevik Technologies, a subsidiary of Vard Shipyard, has developed a new type of gas carrier tank, a cylindrical tank, and has a cylindrical reservoir with Vard Shipyard and Detamarin Design. Ship type development for tank gas carrier (CGC).

Brevik develops a new gas carrier tank - cylindrical tank

Fincantilini and its subsidiary Vard Shipyard have developed a new LNG carrier design. It can be said that it is a bulk carrier with a cylindrical gas storage tank that can transport LNG, LPG, ethane or ethylene. The simplified design of the ship and cargo containment system reduces costs and makes LNG ships easier to build, from the past construction of shipyards with experience in gas boat construction to those that can be built by any shipyard with experience in bulk carrier construction. And the problem of liquid cargo sloshing will no longer affect the design, and the cost of the ship will be significantly reduced. According to Vard Shipyard, it is expected that the model will receive 25% of the LNG new and modified ship market share by 2020. A bold prediction is that the future design of cylindrical tanks will become the standard design.

It is reported that Brevik Technology has designed a series of cylindrical steel storage tanks based on the B.Delta bulk carrier type of Detamarin Design and placed the enclosure in the B.Delta. This type of vessel has an efficient hull, is relatively simple to construct, and the tank is mainly made of steel, which reduces costs and can be used as an alternative to existing containment systems. ABS considers this cylindrical tank to be independent of the hull structure so that the tank can expand in all directions without applying stress to the hull. The membrane type containment system requires specialized construction techniques and there is a lot of work at the dock after launching, while CGC is not required in some respects.

The CGC design currently consists of six options: 6500 m3, 30,000 m3, 65,000 m3, 175,000 m3 LNG ships, and 12,000 m3 and 15,000 m3 LEG and LPG ships. The company's current target is the medium-sized boat market, which will then expand into the large gas carrier market in the future. The 32,000 m3 multi-gas carrier based on the D'Mallin B.Delta design has a total length of 175.0 m, a length of 171.7 m between the vertical lines, a width of 27.0 m, a height of 13.0 m to the upper deck, a design draught of 6.9 m, a square factor of 0.87, and service speed. 14 kn. Brevik Technology's 6500 m3 gas carrier has a total length of 99.8 m, a vertical length of 97.3 m, a width of 18.6 m, a height of 15.0 m to the upper deck, a design draught of 5.9 m, a square factor of 0.75 and a service speed of 14 kn.

Brevik Technologies is working with ABS on design review and patent applications for this type of vessel, and is working with DNV GL to participate in the development and design review of the project. Moreover, patents have been obtained from Norway, Singapore, China and the United States, and patents for Brazil, Japan and South Korea are being applied for. The application for European patent rights will wait until the revision of the European patent regulations.

It is understood that Chinese shipyards and European shipyards may be the first to build such small and medium-sized LNG carriers. Currently, Brevik Technology is negotiating with a number of customers and has entered the advanced stage. The pricing of such ships has been completed, according to the details completed by Vard Shipyard. Pricing shows that CGC ships can save 18% to 25% compared to film type. At the same time, Brevik Technologies plans to price large LNG carriers by the end of this year. The price of a large LNG ship is currently about 200 million US dollars, and the CGC design is expected to be reduced by up to 25%. However, the detailed pricing process has not been completed, but the price will at least Reduce by 20%.

According to the report, the competition for the storage tank market of large LNG carriers is monopolized by MOSS or GTT. The ultra-large gas carrier (VLGC) currently uses either GTT's membrane system or large aluminum spherical MOSS storage tanks. There is a lack of competition in the large LNG ship containment system market. Some shipowners complain about the current market competition and believe that they not only need to pay higher fees to GTT's film system, but also pay the costs associated with tanks to prevent sloshing damage. The selection of small and medium-sized LNG carrier protection systems is slightly wider, and it also includes prismatic storage tanks and C-type storage tanks. However, the market may change in the future. The cylindrical tank technology developed by Brevik Technologies provides the shipping industry with a convenient construction solution that is expected to change the market competition.
